Cinematograpghy-Bush

In this extract from Fashion Fantasy we can see from the cinematographic back in those days wasn't as developed as it is today. When there is a change in scenery or just a general chance, it isn't done very smoothly. It jumps from one shot to another. However there is a variety of camera shots used, for example when the lady character is walking along the road and the over voice says "Perhaps there will be a bus passing soon" there is a long shot of her and the empty road. It is used to create irony to show that its an empty road and the bus wont be coming. Other shots it uses is Close ups and the most frequent use of the medium shot. The editing however is pretty good for the time. For example when the lady falls asleep and her ghost comes out of her, this effect is quite powerful because it is truly a realistic object in the scene that would shock the audience because they wouldn't have been used to such effects  because they wouldn't be constantly used in films

The close up shot of his hands shaking had the effect of showing how emotional he is and the shaking of the hands connotes that he is either scared or cold. Both connotation are bad ones and relate to something unhappy. Also the close ups of the soldiers faces are effective as they help to show the emotions of each individual solider, we see that  each one has the same sort of facial expression which connotes that they are all feeling the same, scared frightened cold, also the camera movement that is used is panning as it helps to shows the faces clearly and slowly.
Another very goo tecquinie used is there is a lot of use of point of view shots. This is effective as it allows the audience to see from the point of view from the soldiers putting them in their shoes and making them become more involved with the film and allows them to feel the experience for themselves.

This is the first still image I found. This is an big close up camera shot, the effect this has is it shows the audience that the person is really focusing and that its a really small hole that they are looking through as it shows only the light on the eye. Also if we knew the film well, the close up allows us to tell who the character is because we cant really tell because they are in the dark.

This is a long shot and a low angle shot. This is effective because it shows the character as a much higher and superior status. Its shows he is powerful and that the others are below him. Also through the long shot we as an audience are able to see his stance which is quite tall and confident showing he is really quite an important person.

This is a long shot camera angle. It allows us to see a full view of the setting and it helps to emphases the horror and scariness of the house. Its also allows us to see how grand and big the house is and this connotes that the person who owns it is quite a powerful and rich

Film Distribution- Wigley

 What is Film Distribution?
Film distribution is the process which a movie goes through to make it visible for the audiences. This can be done through releasing in the cinema's, go straight to DVD/ Blue-ray or a TV release

There are three main ways in which a movie can be released. There is the standard release, this process would include the film being released first in cinema viewings only, after 16 weeks it will be released on to DVD/ Blue-ray. After two years the film may be shown on TV. This process is what most films go through.

The second type of release is called a simultaneous release A simultaneous release takes place when a movie is made available on many media for example cinema, DVD, Internet at the same time or with very little difference in timing.

The last way of releasing a movie is straight- to video release. This  release happens when a movie is released on DVD without being released in cinemas first

Film Path
  • Someone has an idea for a movie.
  • They create an pitch and use it to promote their idea to an panel of producer.
  • A studio or independent investor decides to buy rights to the film.
  • A story bored is made.
  • Auditions are held ad the actors are chosen to play the parts in the movie.
  • Rehearsals take place.
  • Setting and locations are picked or made.
  • Film is started
  • The finished product is sent to the editing area to be edited and if needed special effects are added.
  • The film is made.
  • The film is sent to a studio and they make a licensing agreement with a distribution company.
  • The distribution company says how many copies of the film to make.
  • The distribution company shows the movie  to people who are willing to buy the movie representing the theaters.
  • The buyers negotiate with the distribution company on which movies they wish to lease and the terms of the lease agreement.
  • The film makers advertise the movies release.
  • The movie is sent to cinemas before the release date
  • A premier is held (first showing of the movie)
  • The film is shown for a period of time
  • We buy tickets to watch the film
  • The film comes out on DVD six months late

Film Noir- Bush

Research on Film Noir
Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas  particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. Film noir had a distinct style, with shadow-filled low-key lighting. Night ruled in film noir, the shadow more important than the light. To get a good shadow, you need a small intense light. This is called hard light. You can create hard light with a small, very intense lighting fixture. Film noir uses more light to get solid crisp blacks and stark whites. These films were mainly made in the US and Germany around the time of the depression. Which was a time of poverty, crime which a lot of these film include in them.
Still Image

This picture uses flier light the uses of using this is it helps to soften the shadow and makes the picture more clear. It allows the audience to see clearly whats going on in the picture without the mess of the shadows getting in the way. Also I believe that there is use of top lighting, the use of this allows us to see the features of the characters and pick out certain details of them. For example the use of the props the gun in the female characterss hand. You wouldn't have normally seen it but because of the lighting it cast a light shadow over her hand and we see it, its done very discretely, this effect makes us sense she is the fem fetal. Also the fact that woman's face is half in the dark we can connote from this that she has a evil/ dark side. Also the fact  that half her face is in the life we can connote that she was seen by other characters as an innocent/ loving woman's

Short Extract

The use of low key lighting connotes mystery. Its a really busy setting and background in the dark, at night which is actually quite bazaar because you would expect people to be in their homes and asleep. The dark lighting on the police officers connotes they aren't to be trusted and that the fact that no one is listening to them connotes that the police have no control over this place . At the end we see a car that been lit on fire and thrown to the ground. The lighting around this is all dark and the only light we get is from the fire that's from the car. I believe a lot of top lighting is used to because a lot shadow can be seen around the areas. This connotes a lot of mystery and secrecy

Mise-En-Scene: Bush

The distinctive still image i found was a movie poster of a film called Alma. The mise- en- scene suggest to us serval different things. The setting as you can see has snow around it, suggest that the film will be set in a cold area. From the poster we can see the setting is outside because of the pavment crubs, however the girl seems to be writing on a black borad which would only be found in classrooms. This connotes other settings in the film. Also the snow also connotes to us coldness, which connotes lonelyness. This tells the audience that the film is going to have themes of sadness and isolation.
Also the type of clothing (Costume) that the girl in the poster is waaring, suggests this because we would only asociate these clothing with wintriness.
The chacaters pose is turned against the audience, so we can not see her face. This connotes serectcy and conntes to the audience that there is more to this little girl, therefore it is a way of achoring the audience into watching the film.
The lighting on the poster is quite dark and dull. This creates the an intense atmosphere and creates suspense, also it connotes the mystery in the film.

In this scene of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows the lighting is extremely dark and there is very little light apart from the fire in the back ground. This has been done so a bad, intense atmosphere. Its is done because this is a meeting between the villain of the film and his follows to show that it is a very important meeting and the fact that they are planning something evil. Also the connotations of darkness mostly negative. Darkness is associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery, which all so these qualities are found in the villain.
Between the second 0.03 to 0.15 the fair place can be seen, with a lit fire. The fire connotes war, danger, pain.  So the fire is able to emphase the villain and his follows personalities, also it gives a scary image about the scene.
The costumes that the actors are wearing are all black. The connotations of black are death and evil. Also because they are all wearing the same it shows that they are together, an untied front, even though it’s an evil one.

Movie posters Evalutation and Compaersion

Inception
Firstly, the title of the movie is the biggest font on the page and is in red. This makes it stand out more and it is clear that this is what the movie is. Also the word inception relates to lying cheating, these words also relate to death because the action could lead to a persons death. For example cheating a person or being deceitful to them could be small factors that may lead to their death. Therefore the word Inception connotes with death. What adds to the effect even more so is the colour red of the font. Red connotes with death, blood, and suffering. Therefore the title connote to the audience that the film will have a lot of lying in it and suffering.  However the red also connotes love and romance, so we can infer from this that there will be some sort of romance in the film.
The tag line under the title “from the directors of the dark knight” anchors the audience in more because the film “The Dark Knight” was a really high class, top quality film so the audience know that this film would be the same type of quality.
Also at top of the poster the actors name is shown “Leonardo Dicaprio” The use of this also anchors the audience as this actor is a well known actor who has won many awards for his work, because he is one of the greatest actors of our time.
The image of the man standing alone in water connotes to us that he will be on his own through this film and that he is secretive because he doesn’t let anyone in. Also he is holding a gun; the use of the prop connotes violence and death in the film, which would link back to the connotation about the title. The fact that he is standing in water connotes that he will be “drowned” in problems. The waterlooks quite violent as well, not the normal calm still water. This relates with the whole violence theme of the film.
The image itself is quite dark. The lighting used is actually quite dark. This connotes evil and danger, so it also adds to the theme of problem. Also the darkness represents loneliness which links back to the image of the man stand alone.
However towards the back of the poster it gets light and a lot brighter. This connotes happiness and after all the problems in the beginning (The darkness was at the beginning so we assume the problem would come first) there is a solution.
Peter Pan
The image its self has a lot of things going on. Firstly the two characters “Peter Pan” and “Wendy” are the biggest images on the poster. This connotes to us that they are the most important and the main. Also their position they are in is as if they are looking down at the rest of the poster, which is filled with many other different things. This implies the movie will be pack with a lot of things going on in it, which connotes to the theme of adventure. Also peter pans facial expression is in shock which implies there would be a lot of surprises in the movie.
Also the lighting used connotes the good and evilness in the movie. On the right hand side you have the “good guys”. We can tell this because that side is brighter than the left. Also because Peters face is in the light it connotes he is the “hero”. However on the left you have the “evil guys” We can tell this because firstly, their side is in the dark, and darkness connotes evil, dangers and frightening. Also Captain hooks expression is quite evil, with his evil smirk which connotes that he is an evil villain.  Also he is right next to the pirate ship which has a pirate flag on it, and we normally associate that with evil and dark people.
The brightest part of the movie poster is in the idle this connotes that the will be a feeling of happiness and because the darkness and light connotes good and bad, there’s a sense of good trumping over evil.
Inception vs. Peter Pan
Both poster are equally good as each other because they are of different genres so they present there movies well. However Inception gives more of the storyline away and has better use of lighting and editing. Although this is good as it gives the audience an idea of what to accept, some may argy at the fact that it gives too much away. Peter Pan on the other hand has a lot going on.

Media Ownershhip Reaserch Task- Wigley

Media texts are profit motivated. Consider this in the light of TV news. What issues does this raise?
Media texts are often thought to be over exaggerated, this is because it is entertaining to the audience and it makes them want to watch it more. Media texts aims are to get the highest amount of views. Also they would want to gain control our minds, by this I mean our views on the social and political views. This could be one issue as people will start to believe what the media text say and start going against the right views of the world.
Which media companies do you think could be accused of having to much power and control in our society?
Advertising companies are accused to have to much power as they influence to do things such as buy products or vote for our government (during elections). Also most advertising companies use propaganda which is a form of false advertising therefore putting false views in the audience’s minds. Another example would be the UK government. They publish things about the wars around the world and only tell us what we need to hear for example about the British soldiers. Therefore manipulating the way we think things are going on in the other countries.

Media Trip Notes- Bush

Lecture one
Why do pee talk such rubbish about media studies?

Homer simpsons- parents accuse schools of dumbing down English by showing the simpsons during class time. They are protesting against it and want children to stop learning the Simpsons in media and start to learn more Shakespeare.

Torries say that media is seen as a soft subject and most universities today do not consider it to be a worthy subject- media studies is blacklist by top universities like UCL, LSC, Oxford, Cambridge.

Media studies is accused of encouraging children from a comprehensive schools that they will do well in their other subjects and gives them false hope.

Media studies is a Mickey mouse subject.
Media studies won't get you any decent jobs.

The reality is media studies is an academic subject and is taught at some very top universities, which are quite hard to get into.
Frank leavis suggest to study media and was the one who made it into a real subject.

USA- Media gives audience bad ideas- by not teaching it, we will be saving kids from violence, tobacco, alcohol, sex and obesity.
Teaching the kids about these things will scare them into not doing it- what people believe.
