Next Step: Write a conclusion and identify five spelling mistakes

In conclusion I believe the scene was created well to an extent. The only thing I would have changed would have been the editing. The background even though was blurred out it didn’t look professional.  If it was a must that the background had to be blurred out which I believe was a wise choice because of affect it has but if it was blurred out and made it look professional it would have given more of a Hollywood look.

New Moon Trailer- Wigley

The trailer uses different camera angles which may persuade an audience to watch the film. If the audience have seen the first film then they may understand that Bella and Edward were always shown in Low angle shot. However in this trailer the two main characters are shown in high angle shots which show that their status has changed. For example when Bella is talking to the vampires she is shown in a high angle shot which shows she inst as important. This would persuade the audience to watch the film as they would want to see such a dramatic status change. Also a mid angle shot is used a lot on Bella. This allows us to understand with her and want to understand more about her, which is another way of how the trailer anchors the audience to want to watch the film. It gives them an insight to the character.
The editing also helps anchors the audience to watch the film as the fade to black effect connotes that after the suspense create from the trailer and something is going to happen. Something bad; hence the fade to black. The trailer is full of these fade to blacks which are like cliff-hangers. This draws the audience in as they want to know what the end of the cliff-hanger is. They are left in suspense and wanting to know. Also the fade to black effect is like an away of for shadowing what will happen in the film, once again leaving the audience wanting more.

The target audience that would be attracted to this film would be females aged 12-18. This would be the film primary audience. This is because they would be attracted to the love/romance within the film, the two dominant males Jacob and Edward, some may be able to relate to Bella as they may have been in love themselves or torn between two loves. Another reason they would be the primary audience is because most of these girls would have read the books, therefore they would want to see their fantasy come to life through the film. The secondary audience would be males. They would be interested in the film because of the violence it involves. The majority of the audience will be high school students as they will be able to relate to the films and books however some adults may watch it as a form of escapism.

We can tell this is a Hollywood produced film as it has well known actors in it, which is a typical Hollywood thing. Also Hollywood wouldn’t do something unknown unless it was a completely new thing but as this is known as a well known best book. There is a lot of CGI for example when Bella is in the water and there is CGI used to create Edward. Also the storyline is typical that touches everybody and there is always the happy ending. In addition the film is a mixture of genres which appeal to a wider audience.

In the extract from Eclipse there is no use of props in the scene. The effect this has is it shows that everything is real and it a very serious scene. Also the setting itself is quite calm and peaceful. It is outside in its natural essence. The use of a natural setting connotes that everything happening is pure and meaning full. As an audience we are able to really concentrate on the two characters and their dialog. As the audience is not distracted by other objects and the surroundings they are able to concentrate on the facial expressions and body language the actors use. Their facial expressions are very passionate and intense. Jacob’s facial expressions are quite strong and stern which emphases that he is being very serious about what he is saying. It affects the audience as they taken back by the effect of which Bella has on him. Also they start to sympathies with Jacob because they begin to feel sorry for him and his facial expressions clearly show his pain at some points. In addition his body language is uptight and tense which is related to facial expressions. Through this we are able to make out he is quite uncomfortable and in pain. The audience is able to emphasise with him are drawn into the scene a lot more.
Bella has the same type of facial expression and body language but she looks as if she in pain. She quite upset and very closed up with her hands in her pockets. The audience are connote from this she is quite weak and fragile because she is portrayed in her stance.  

In the scene there is a great deal of close up shots used. The affect a close up shot has is it allows the audience to clearly see the emotions of the characters and its emphases them. Also through the conversation between Bella and Jacob there is a constant use of shot reverse shot. This lets the audience know who is looking, what they are looking at and their reaction after seeing it and because Jacob is giving a very deep meaning full speech to Bella its shows her reaction to his love for her. Also it gives the audience the sense of how much Jacob means what he is saying and they are able to relate to him because some may have gone through his position at some point as most of the target audience watching would be teenage who have been through heart ach and hard relationships.
Another use of camera is the camera movement of the pan. This is used in the beginning of the scene. This effect allows the audience to follow the characters to the lead up to there stand still. It makes the audience feel as if they are physical walking with the characters and it shows the setting to emphasis length.

The sound used in the scene comes in when Jacob starts to make his speech about his love. It starts off quite and as he becomes more and more meaningful and deeper into his confession to Bella the non diegetic sound increases. The affect the increasing sound has is it causes tension as it gives the scene the non-diegetic is leading up to something which is his surprise kiss. It is parallel to the scene as it is quite emotional. This affects the audience as the sound creates a sad tense atmosphere which makes the audience feel more involved and connected to Jacob.

The lighting used in this scene is all high-key. The effect appears more realistic and connotes with the feelings of love, because love is quite a happy feeling. The light also connotes relief and Jacob is getting his emotions out and it’s like a big weight has been lifted from him, but its still causing him pain. The contrast between light and dark is much less pronounced. The affect this has on the audience is that they are able to see everything clearer than if it was in a darker place. Also it just sets the scene as this is very emotional scene.

There is very little use of editing in this scene. This allows a natural following of the scene and it allows the audience to feel as if their not missing anything or as if the scene hasn’t been tampered with. However when the conversation is talking place and the shot reverse shot are happening, setting in the background in blurred out. This affect connotes that nothing is important at this moment in time. It allows the audience to focus on the characters and their conversation.

1.      How does the trailer use media language to establish the films genre?

One way the trailer uses media language to establish the films genre is though the sound. High tempo music is used, this relates with the fast editing and quick camera shots and helps to relate to genre of thriller because of the fast passé in which things are going. Also the diegetic sound of the gun shot at the end makes the audience jump, which is a big feature of a thriller. Also the use of the piano at the beginning is quite sad and slow which would create sympathy from the audience which would relate to another code and convention that the genre drama uses.

Another genre that is represented in this trailer is drama. This is done through the types of camera shots. For example the use of close-up shots are used throughout. It adds to the genre of drama because it focuses on the facial expressions and shows the emotions of the characters which is all sad and frightened which you would normally get in dramas. Another very good shot was the use of a wide shot. The wide shot showed the relationship between the different characters for example when are walking into the hotel. The little girls face is frightened and quite scared. This connotes she is unaware of her surroundings and also doesn’t know what’s going on.

One other way media language helps establish the genre of the trailer is the review extracts. The review extracts mention drama and thriller. Therefore giving the audience some sense of what the film will be about.

The lighting also helps to establish the genre of the trailer. The type of lighting used is low key lighting and is all quite dull and dark. The darkness connotes “sinister” events which we as an audience expect from the genres thriller and drama.

2.      How is gender represented in the trailer?

Both of genders are presented as total opposites of each other; they contrast with each other. The females are presented as the weak, inferior gender, whereas the males are represented as powerful and superior. An example of this is the shot of the male leading both females into the hotel room. He is in front of them connoting that he is more important than them and that he is the leader, the boss. Also the male characters are shown as dangerous people. The scene when he is holding back the little female character connotes that males are the ones in charge, they are the dominant ones. Also there is a scene shot of a male figure holding a gun to the camera. The shot is a low angle shot and the use of this is it emphases on the power of the male. Also the gun connotes that he is evil and dangerous.

The women are presented as sex objects and weak people through the way they are dressed and how the male characters always have them under control, and they are shown to be sexually promiscuous (prostitutes). They are also shown as desperate as the female was sitting on the streets with a cup in her hand connoting she isn’t rich and that she’ll do anything for money.

3.      In what ways is the film London to Brighton typical of a low budget British film?

We can tell that it is a low budget film because of the use of unknown actors. The actors and actresses used in this film are unfamiliar and the audience will not be able to recognise them. This means that the film makers didn’t have enough money to hire well known actors that the audience can relate to.

Another way to tell is the setting. The setting/ location didn’t have to be made from scratch or hired out. It was local public toilets and the streets. This shows not money was put into the setting and locations as they are slum areas, rundown locations. It is a natural setting. However this setting was perfect for the film as it help to set the scene of the films story line.

Furthermore the costumes and make-up are quite simple and ordinary. If it was a high budget film you would see more glamorous suits and dress that they wear but in the film everything is kept to a minimum.

In addition the story line itself gives it away that the film is of a low budget. A Hollywood film wouldn’t create such a realistic film, they would glamorise everything. For example; instead of showing prostitutes as ugly weak women. Hollywood would show them as beautiful, sexy women, with extremely gorgeous clothing, with perfect hair and make-up. They wouldn’t create a film which some audience may not like. They would have a lot more to lose, whereas a low budget British film doesn’t have much to lose so they are able to take the risk of making this type of film.
